The New York Yankees faced off against the Oakland Athletics yesterday at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum with the Yankees securing the victory 7 to 2. It was a great baseball game that fans with Yankees tickets will remember for quite some time.
Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia (3.58 ERA) got the win, while Jay Marshall (9.82 ERA) took the loss for the Athletics. CC Sabathia went 8 solid innings for the Yankees, allowed 5 hits, 2 home runs and 2 earned runs with one walk and 7 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Yankees was David Robertson (3.06). The Athletics’s starter Vin Mazzaro went 5 innings, allowed 6 hits, no home runs and one earned run with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Santiago Casilla (5.73), and Jeff Gray (1.17) also pitched for the Athletics. With the win, Sabathia’s record goes to 14-7, while Marshall drops to 0-1.
In addition to the 7 runs, the Yankees put up 12 hits and committed no errors. Derek Jeter led the Yankees in hitting with 3 hits, followed by Melky Cabrera’s 2 hits, and Hideki Matsui with 2. Jorge Posada had a tough day at the plate, leaving 5 runners on base. The Athletics didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Ryan Sweeney could not get much going at the plate as he left 5 runners on base. The Athletics got 2 runs, 5 hits and 4 errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Jerry Layne, Todd Tichenor, Chris Guccione and Mike Winters. There were 25,383 Athletics ticket holders in attendance at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
The win puts the Yankees at a record of 75-45, at the top of their division, while the loss brings the Athletics to 53-66, (20 games behind the division leader). The Athletics will try to return the favor tomorrow. There are still plenty of tickets available so take a look.
