The New York Yankees vaporized the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday at Tropicana Field with the Yankees picking up the W 6 to 2. It was one heck of a game that folks with Yankees tickets aren’t likely to forget.
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain (3.58 ERA) got the win, while Matt Garza (3.69 ERA) took the loss for the Rays. Joba Chamberlain went 8 solid innings for the Yankees, allowed 3 hits, no home runs and no earned runs with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Yankees was Brian Bruney (6.16), and Mariano Rivera (2.08). The Rays’s starter Matt Garza went 7 innings, allowed 8 hits, one home run and 3 earned runs with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Brian Shouse (5.87), Lance Cormier (2.98), and Dan Wheeler (3.86) also pitched for the Rays. With the win, Chamberlain’s record goes to 7-2, while Garza is at 7-8.
In addition to the 6 runs, the Yankees scored 12 hits and committed no errors. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Yankees, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. Alex Rodriguez had a tough day at the plate, leaving 4 runners on base. The Rays didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. The Rays managed 2 runs, 6 hits and one error.
Umpiring duties were performed by Doug Eddings, Dana DeMuth, Brian Knight and Hunter Wendelstedt. There were 32,398 Rays ticket holders in attendance at Tropicana Field.
The win puts the Yankees at a record of 62-39, at the top of their division, while the loss brings the Rays to 55-47, (7.5 games behind the division leader).
